Discovering Salento, between sea and amusement parks: an outdoor museum in Caprarica

28 Apr

From the prehistory to the Middle Ages, passing through the Romans: six sections, all over 12 hectares of land, make the history come back to life in the largest open-air museum of Italy. Kalòs, the Archeodromo del Salento is located in the Serra of Galugnano, in Caprarica di Lecce and it is a sort of museum that recalls the life of mankind from prehistory to the more recent times.

Six sections trace the evolution of human civilization: the protohistory, the Bronze Age village, the Messapian city, the Roman world, the medieval village and the peasant civilization.

The archaeodrome stands on an area where, about 3000 years ago, there was a Bronze Age settlement among the largest in the Salento area, of which today are preserved sections of the ancient city walls.

The site was also inhabited during the Roman times under the name “Li Sierri di Tiberio, Ottavio and Costantino”.

Guided tours, workshops, experimental archeology are some of the activities that you can do in the archaeodrome, guided by specialized operators. The site is also where many historical and cultural events take place as a natural setting.
