Salento coast to coast: tour from the Adriatic to the Ionian in 24 hours

9 Gen

Salento is the land between the two seas and has a coastal stretch that is over 150 km long with a variety of breathtaking landscapes. From the Adriatic to the Ionian coast, there are dozens of seaside resorts that arise on both rocky and sandy stretches of coast. There are many coves that you can meet along the coast where you can stop to admire the landscape or just for a dip.

If you want to discover every inch of the coast, we provide you with a mini guide with the most important stops to be covered in 24 hours, starting from San Foca up to Porto Cesareo.

ADRIATIC COAST:

SAN FOCA

We start from San Foca, a marina on the Adriatic, about 25 km from Lecce. It is a seaside village with a sixteenth-century tower and comfortable beaches.

ROCA VECCHIA

Continuing south, a few minutes’ drive away, you reach Roca Vecchia, home to the renowned “Grotta della Poesia”, a natural salt water pool, one of the most evocative in the world. Around an important archaeological area with traces from the second millennium BC. to the medieval age.

TORRE DELL’ORSO

A real spectacle are the extravagant shaped stacks, such as the “Le Due Sorelle”, symbol of the navy.

OTRANTO

It is the easternmost city in Italy with one of the most evocative ancient villages of Salento.

The sea is to the north with the beaches of the Alimini Lakes and to the south with wild coves such as Baia delle Orte, ideal for divers.

PORTO BADISCO

It is a deep and narrow natural inlet, surrounded by prickly pears and myrtle. The small cove of sand and fresh water springs is the perfect stop for those who have little confidence with the cliff.

SANTA CESAREA TERME

Since 1899 it has been an elegant spa with numerous sulfur springs and caves along the coast. The water that smells of sulfur gives the sea turquoise reflections.

CASTRO

It is a fishing village of ancient origins, as evidenced by the remains of the “temple of Minerva” and the Zinzulusa cave. It looks like a nativity scene overlooking the sea with the old city, Castro di sopra. Castro di sotto is a balcony overlooking one of the most beautiful Apulian coves.

TRICASE PORTO

Enjoy a regenerating swim enjoying the view between ancient villas, fishermen’s houses and the small harbour with the restored historic goiters.

SANTA MARIA DI LEUCA

You are in the southernmost point of Salento, the place where the two seas meet. Take a boat trip to visit the many caves, including the Grotta del Diavolo, del Drago and dei Giganti. The viewpoint of Punta Meliso offers an extraordinary glance.

IONIAN COAST:

LIDI DI UGENTO

Crystal clear sea with shallow and sandy bottoms and wide beaches characterize the marine of Ugento, from Lido Marini to Torre Mozza, up to Torre San Giovanni.

GALLIPOLI

Beaches for all tastes and a cycle / pedestrian road connects Baia Verde to Punta della Suina, here sandbanks and coves are protected by dunes, then the Aleppo pine forest and nature goes wild up to Torre del Pizzo. “La Purità” is the beach of the Gallipolini.

REGIONAL NATURAL PARK OF PORTO SELVAGGIO AND PALUDE DEL CAPITANO

It is the oldest park in Puglia and offers breathtaking views, such as that of the high and rocky coast of Porto Selvaggio covered with Aleppo pines with a tiny pebble beach that plunges into the sea to the suggestive landscape around Torre Inserraglio.

PORTO CESAREO

White beaches protected by majestic dunes alternate with low cliffs overlooking a crystalline sea, from Punta Prosciutto to Torre Inserraglio. It is a 32-kilometer-long portion of coast, one of the most famous in Salento, characterized by fine sand and clear sea.
