27 Feb

Beyond the beaches and the sea that make Salento‘s panoramas an extraordinary paradise with an exotic charm, this land hides secret places that tell of precious artistic and architectural testimonies, as well. The “underground” Salento is a tour to discover the hidden places of Salento. Read here to find out more.

Crypt of S. Cristina – Two stairways lead to the crypt dedicated to Santa Cristina, whose very ancient origins date back to the IX-X century. The crypt consists of 2 naves and 3 apses carved into the tuff. Inside, the oldest frescoes in the region are preserved, indicating the dates, commission and name of the artists, as well as a large number of inscriptions in Greek. Delicate is the scene of the Annunciation with the Madonna spinning wool and S. Cristina with a veil over her face.

Carpignano Salentino – It is one of the municipalities of the Grecìa Salentina, located about 20 km south of Lecce and 10 km from Otranto. In this ancient village the “griko” is still spoken, a local dialect with a strong Greek contamination. Every September the “Sagra de lu mieru” is celebrated, one of the oldest festivals in Salento.
