The crypt of the Cathedral in Lecce

Composed of three large naves, with a Greek cross plan and small cross vaults on the ceiling, the Crypt rests on 92 columns at the top of which finely decorated capitals can be admired. The crypt has typical features of the style of the original structure built by the Normans in the fourteenth century at the behest of Bishop Roberto Volturio.


Salento capital, Lecce is above all the city of the Baroque where the architectural style permeates the entire old town with its palaces, churches and monuments. Do not miss the central square (Piazza Sant’Oronzo) with the column dedicated to the Patron Saint and the “Sedile”. The Basilica of Santa Croce and the Cathedral are enchanting.
