Natural oasis of Salento: the park of “Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano”

4 Apr

A dense forest of pines, a cliff overlooking the emerald green of the sea is the panorama that can be admired from the Park that extends around the area of the homonymous bay of Porto Selvaggio for 7 km of coastline and 1500 hectares of surface, in the area of the municipality of Nardò.

The Natural Park was established in 2006 in an area on the sea affected by various reforestation interventions that began in the 1950s. First barren and rocky, today the landscape is characterized by the presence of a dense pine forest inserted in the splendid setting of the Ionian Sea.

The vegetation of the wood is characterized by Aleppo pines, some specimens of cypresses and eucalyptus and by the presence of an undergrowth with wild myrtle, olive trees and spontaneous local vegetation (Macchia Mediterranea), including orchids and rosemary.

Do not fail to spot species such as foxes, weasels, hedgehogs, chameleons and, during the migration period, even the blackbird, thrush and hoopoe in addition to the lesser kestrel and the kestrel.

A few meters from the coast you can also visit the Palude del Capitano where the karst phenomenon has given rise to the “spunnulate”, or caves whose vault has collapsed, forming lakes of brackish water. To find out other natural parks in Salento, read here.

Protected unspoiled oasis, the natural parks of Salento

21 Feb

Lying in the sun for hours isn’t exactly the only work-out you planned to do on vacation? No problem! Sandy beaches and crystal clear sea water aren’t just the only beauties in Salento.

Kilometers and kilometers of coastline touch an uncontaminated territory full of natural riches. The scents and colors of the “Macchia Mediterranea” (the typical flora and fauna of these areas) are awaiting you for a unique sensory experience, where nature, in its raw state, will enchant you.

There are six natural parks in Salento, starting from Lecce up to the most extreme point of the Heel. Let’s go explore them in geographical order!

Bosco and Paludi di Rauccio Regional Natural Park is on the outskirts of Lecce, just 9 km from the Salento capital, and extends over 1596 hectares. Here, we find a beautiful holm oak forest, the sandy coast, some marshy areas where the short course of the Idume stands out, a basin and drainage channels.

“Le Cesine” Nature Reserve is close to Lecce as well, which is about 15 km away, on the Adriatic coast of Salento. The park extends for 620 hectares from the coast south of San Cataldo to Vernole and it is the oldest institution park dating back to 1980.

Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano Regional Natural Park is located on the Ionian side of Salento. Extending over an area of 1100 hectares in the Nardò area, the park is characterized by a dense pine forest and has been affected by a series of reforestation interventions that began in the 1950s.

Isola di Sant’Andrea and Litorale di Punta Pizzo Regional Natural Park extends into the territory of Gallipoli, on the Ionian side. The park is home to the only breeding colony of the Corsican Gull.

The Regional Natural Park “Litorale di Ugento” is the most recent to be established (2007) and one of the most interesting and precious areas of the Salento Peninsula, for its naturalistic, historical and landscape value. It covers about 1600 hectares and is characterized by a high variety of natural environments.

Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca and Bosco di Tricase Regional Natural Park, established in 2006, covers an area of over 3 thousand hectares and affects 12 municipalities in Salento, from Otranto to Tricase, passing through Castro. Breathtaking views along the eastern coast of Salento characterize the park, from the Grotta della Zinzulusa to the Grotta dei Cervi with the pictograms of the prehistoric era.

Post-pandemic tourism, the new trends for the 2021

24 Gen

Italian, clean and sustainable. It is not the slogan for a commercial product made in Italy, but the trend for the 2021 holiday. Domestic tourism, longer and “slower” holidays and greater attention for cleaning. These are the characteristics sought by travelers for the next vacation.

The health emergency, which has profoundly changed our daily habits, has not spared even the tourism field.People have returned to travel but they think about vacation in a more sustainable way: closer destinations, longer stays and in healthier and cleaner environments. These are the trends that emerge from some reports from Skyscanner and Booking.com.

DOMESTIC TOURISM – Confirming the trend of last March / April, domestic tourism is on a constantly growing trajectory, confirming the change in habits. Italians prefer closer destinations, also because they are easier to reach by car.

LONG STAY – Skyscanner report highlights this trend. And if it is true that the increase in one-way travel in March 2020 was justified by the need to reunite with loved ones, in recent months the trend has continued to rise.

Why? Because people are starting to combine holidays and smartworking: with the possibility of enjoying quality time with loved ones, without neglecting work. Find out how here.

BOOKING – Many travelers are willing to book even within a month of departure. Furthermore, more flexible cancellation policies favor bookings because they make travelers feel safer even in the event of unforeseen events.

CLEANING – Attention for well cleaned spaces ha increased. An element, that of hygiene, already emerged from the TripAdvisor report last June and strengthened by that of Booking.com. On the portals there was a considerable increase (of over 60%) in the use of terms, in the research phase, of a structure such as “clean” and “hygiene”.

SUSTAINABILITY – A review of old habits also reflects in terms of sensitivity to our planet. Yes to the road trip by car, instead of traveling by plane. Yes to a slower tourism, no to “hit and run” destinations.

Italy, with the richness of its landscapes and its cultural, architectural and cultural traditions, will thank you!

Flexible cancellation policies in case of new restrictions, high cleaning standards and extra services in order to live a unique sensory experience. Choose your ideal holiday house/villa for your 2021 vacation in Salento, here

Exploring Salento, the land of Primitivo wine

14 Giu

Do you want to explore Salento in an different way? We suggest you an alternative way to visit our land, following the Via del Primitivo, a wine of local production which, together with Negroamaro, is one of the main products of Salento. Through a path that combines taste with history, we discover the origins and properties of this wonderful grape variety.

From Manduria to Lizzano, passing through S. Giorgio Jonico, Pulsano, Leporano, San Marzano di San Giuseppe, Sava and Avetrana, here they are the villages where we can find Primitivo wine. With a red color and an intense flavor, Primitivo goes well with cheeses, legume soups, grilled lamb.

FEATURES

Always used as a cutting wine, today Primitivo di Manduria represents one of the main product of Salento’s enology. The notes of sweet and ripe fruit (blackberries, cherries, plums) and spices define the taste of Primitivo, a wine with low acidity and high alcohol content.

Dry as a meal or natural dessert, the wine goes perfectly with grilled meats or aged cheeses. Primitivo is also the perfect companion for traditional Apulian sweets with ricotta, almond and dried fig fillings. A glass of Primitivo is fine even if tasted alone: you’ll be able to appreciate its particular notes. There are two different types: Primitivo di Manduria DOC and Primitivo di Manduria natural sweet DOCG.

Pasticciotto

HISTORY

It is not clear when the vine came in Salento. Maybe it was the ancient Greeks who brought it here or the Romans from Dalmatia. In fact, the wine is genetically very similar to the Crljenak Kastelsnski cultivated from Istria to the Sabbioncello peninsula. Another descendant from Primitivo is Zinfandel, a California cult species. In fact, it seems that, in the early nineteenth century, it was exported overseas by some Apulian migrant.

For the production of wine, the harvests take place at night, the only time when you can have respite from the heat and the sun. In 2011, in the Dolce Naturale version, the Primitivo becomes DOCG, protected and enhanced by the presence of the Primitivo Protection Consortium.

ITINERARIES

The Primitivo paths unfold in unparalleled naturalistic scenarios. We suggest you to bring comfortable shoes and a camera to capture the enchanting landscapes, such as the Natural Reserves of the Eastern Tarantino Coast: from the salt pans animated by numerous species of birds, including pink flamingos, to the marshes embellished with multiple varieties of orchids, holm oak woods and the presence of the Chidro river, custodian of Roman necropolises.

Lastly, we recommend a visit to the Museum of the Primitive Wine Civilization, testimony of the social history and agrarian vocation of this land.

If you don’t know where to sleep in Salento, here you will find some useful advice.
